Description

Traditional Hot Cross Buns are a beloved treat that fills the air with the warm aroma of spices and citrus. These soft, pillowy buns are perfect for any occasion, not just Easter. With a delightful blend of flavors and a beautifully glazed cross, they are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven or toasted with butter. Bake these buns to create cherished memories in your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup dried currants or raisins
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • Icing sugar for glazing

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by warming the milk and mixing it with sugar and yeast; let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. Create a well in the center and add melted butter, eggs, and the yeast mixture.
  3. Mix until combined; knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Gently punch down the dough and fold in currants or raisins. Divide into equal portions (12-15) and shape into balls.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Arrange buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet; let rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before glazing with icing sugar.
