  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • ⅓ cup baking soda (for boiling solution)
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and brown sugar. Sprinkle active dry yeast on top and let it sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. Gradually add salt and flour to the yeast mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal pieces. Roll each piece into long ropes and twist into pretzel shapes.
  5. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and dissolve baking soda in it. Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds before placing them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Sprinkle coarse sea salt on top of each pretzel and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
