  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring (gel)
  • For the Frosting: 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1 cup crushed Oreos

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two round cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix sugar and vegetable oil; add eggs one at a time, beating well. Stir in buttermilk and red food coloring until combined.
  4. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just blended.
  5. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool completely before frosting.
  7. Beat cream cheese with powdered sugar and vanilla until fluffy. Optionally fold in crushed Oreos before frosting layers and the top of the cake.
